Accelerated, energy-conserving Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics via Fock matrix extrapolation.

چکیده
Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics calculations, especially those that exploit information retained from previous time steps in order to accelerate convergence of the electronic structure calculations, can suffer from systematic error in the energy gradient that manifests as a drift in the microcanonical energy. Here, we demonstrate that this is only the case when the self-consistent field (SCF) convergence criterion is set too low; using only a marginally tighter threshold (still two orders of magnitude lower than what is standard for geometry optimizations), the drift disappears completely, for a time scale of several picoseconds. Using a Fock matrix extrapolation technique, SCF convergence is achieved in as few as three iterations per time step, without sacrificing energy conservation. In test calculations for C2F4, (H2O4-, (H2O6, and [Fe(H2O6]2+, we demonstrate energy-conserving Fock matrix extrapolation that reduces the number of SCF cycles by up to 70% and reduces the computer time per molecular dynamics step by 45-55%, relative to simulations performed without extrapolation.

Time-reversible quantum molecular dynamics
Time-reversible ab initio molecular dynamics based on a lossless multi-channel decomposition for the integration of the electronic degrees of freedom [Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 123001 (2006)] is explored. We present a lossless time-reversible density matrix molecular dynamics scheme. متن کاملAn extrapolation method for the efficient calculation of molecular response properties within Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics.
The calculation of molecular response properties in dynamic molecular systems is a major challenge that requires sampling over many steps of, e.g., Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics (BO-MD) simulations. We present an extrapolation scheme to accelerate such calculations for multiple steps within BO-MD trajectories or equivalently within other sampling methods of conformational space. The extra...

We present a time-reversible Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics scheme, based on self-consistent Hartree-Fock or density functional theory, where both the nuclear and the electronic degrees of freedom are propagated in time. We show how a time-reversible adiabatic propagation of the electronic degrees of freedom is possible despite the nonlinearity and incompleteness of the self-consistent fie...

We present the Gaussian and plane waves (GPW) method and its implementation in QUICKSTEP which is part of the freely available program package CP2K. The GPW method allows for accurate density functional calculations in gas and condensed phases and can be effectively used for molecular dynamics simulations. We show how derivatives of the GPW energy functional, namely ionic forces and the Kohn-Sh...
